R-1 Visa & Status

The R-Visa is used for religious affiliates completing work pertaining to religious occupations. Such a visa is issued to:

  • A person working in a professional capacity in a religious vocation or occupation.

Religious occupation is an activity which relates to traditional religious function, e.g., cantors, liturgical workers, translators, religious broadcasters, and workers in religious hospitals but not if they are performing lay work.

Religious vocation relates to traditional religious function, for example, minister, nun, monk. If person practices religious vocation, it does not matter what job s/he performs (e.g., could include janitor).

A person working for a religious organization in a religious vocation or occupation. Some conditions do apply.

Spouse and children may accompany or follow to join.
